Professional Training Services:
The Human Services Workshops (HSW)
Since 1976, Good Shepherd has been strongly committed to providing ongoing professional development and training to both our own staff and social service providers throughout the City. These workshops both ensure best practices and high quality programs for those with whom we work.
Renewing Knowledge and Skill in the Helping Professions
Each year, nearly 2,000 staff members from as many as 150 social service, education, and recreation programs take part in The Human Services Workshops (HSW), our professional development and in-service training program. These workshops provide opportunities for social service professionals to gain the skills and confidence necessary for effective work with children, youth, and families. Participants receive training on a variety of areas including interventions in substance abuse, child abuse, domestic violence and youth development; play therapy; group work with youth; working with youth in residential settings; counseling skills; cultural awareness; and supervisory skills. At a time of increasingly complex client needs and continuing change in the fields of child welfare, employment training and public education, HSW provides a critical forum for sharing innovative ideas and professional knowledge.
Sharing Innovations and Best Practices Leads to Shared Success
By increasing the knowledge, resources and skills of New York City's social service providers, our professional training program positively affects the lives of thousands of children, youth and families every year.
