Programs for Court Involved Youth
We have two programs in our constellation of community-based services in Brooklyn which serve the needs of youth who have already become involved with the juvenile justice system. We seek to reconnect these young people with school and the community and help them to develop more positive relationships with both their peers and with adults. Collaborative Family Initiative (CFI)
Family focused program for youth ages 13-17 with mental health needs returning to the community from secure and non-secure detention to help avoid a return to custody. The program provides case management; educational assessment; individual, family, and group counseling; crisis intervention; and linkages to public services. In addition, CFI participants are able to take part in leadership training through linkage with Good Shepherd’s Red Hook Beacon Community Center and have opportunities for stipended internships. Weekend recreational activities and social opportunities help them develop networks of positive peer and adult support. Mental health assessment and treatment services (when needed) are provided in partnership with John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ).
Innovative Neighborhood-Based Strategies to Promote Youth Redirection and Empowerment (INSPYRE)
Program for youth ages 13-17 who are court involved, but have not necessarily been in detention. Participants receive case management, educational assessment, counseling, and crisis intervention services, youth development leadership training and stipended internships. Youth also take part in weekend recreational activities and social opportunities to help them build civic, social, and leadership skills, while learning to develop positive social support networks.
