GOOD SHEPHERD SERVICES

Brooklyn Network:
After-School Centers and Summer Camps

Since 1991, Good Shepherd has adopted a strategy of developing out-of-school-time programming as part of a broader effort to help vulnerable young people succeed in school.  Our after-school programs keep children and teens safe and help them strengthen academic, leadership, cultural, and career awareness skills –improving their outcomes in school, at home and in the community.  We work in partnership with each school to provide educationally rich environments that create seamless links with the regular school day.  These programs help to reinforce lessons learned during school in new and creative ways while at the same time providing opportunities for young people to expand their horizons, learn new skills and nurture special talents and interests.  Special events and shows during the year help to highlight our students’ accomplishments and provide opportunities for parents to take pride in their student’s achievements and to feel more comfortable in the school.  Our summer camps keep children and youth safe and engaged during the summer months when school is out.

Red Hook Community Center Beacon at PS 15

Our nationally replicated community center and one of New York City's original ten Beacon programs, initiated in 1991, is a focal point for the entire community. It provides year-round, day, evening, and weekend activities for more than 2,000 young people and their families annually. Activities designed to promote individual, family and community development include an after-school program for six to twelve year olds; four youth leadership development groups that engage youth from the ages of 9-21; a summer camp program and events such as the annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner.

After-School Center at PS 27

Initiated in 1999, provides a continuum of after-school activities including tutoring and homework help, project based learning activities, arts and music, sports, recreational games, parent involvement activities, and career awareness projects for elementary and middle school students in Red Hook as well as a summer camp.
