GOOD SHEPHERD SERVICES

Program News 2006

Good Shepherd Residence Featured in Oprah’s Magazine

Good Shepherd's St. Helena's Residence, a long-term group residential program for 21 adolescent girls, is featured in the current issue of O at Home, following a makeover of the common room through the magazine's Good Works program. Interior designer Elaine Griffin and the Good Works team transformed the room from top to bottom, rewiring the ceiling for recessed lighting, replacing the industrial carpeting with parquet wood floors and sprucing up everything in between with youthful yet homey furniture, a new paint job, and more.

Griffin's connections and tenacity proved invaluable, resulting in donations from corporations such as Blu Dot, Hold Everything, Maids of Manhattan and Wingard Home. The generosity went well beyond the physical renovation of the space, as Griffin also managed to secure a library of several hundred books from Random House, a one year subscription to Netflix, and a group seminar with Harriette Cole, the author of How to Be: A Guide to Contemporary Living for African Americans.

After the initial unveiling and photo shoot, residents were surprised one day by the unheralded appearance of Oprah herself. Following a look at the renovations, she sat down with the girls for an intimate and inspiring chat, sharing stories from her own difficult childhood, and attentively listening to the stories of our young women.
