Preparing for Jobs and Careers
As part of our increased focus on disconnected older adolescents, Good Shepherd Services has recently launched a new initiative called Learning To Work. Funded by the Department of Education, Learning To Work offers in-depth exploration of career and educational options, as well as hands-on experience through subsidized internships, which are the centerpiece of the program. The initiative will serve the students in our two Brooklyn Young Adult Borough Centers (Y.A.B.C's), which provide specialized services to students over eighteen who require five or more years to graduate from high school, and the older students at South Brooklyn Community High School (SBCHS), our model public high school for former dropouts.
Participants will be offered comprehensive job readiness workshops, and then be placed in 10-hour-per-week internships which provide exposure to career paths and lead to skills development. A job developer has been hired to aggressively pursue internship opportunities in government, private industry and non-profit organizations located in Brooklyn or Manhattan, including programs within our own agency. We will be providing incentive-building stipends for the youth ourselves, to open up the partnership possibilities for organizations who do not have a budget for interns. We will also be providing ongoing supervision and support to the interns and the internship site.
If you are interested in partnering with us on this initiative by placing an intern, please click here for more information, or contact Elliot Miley at 718-965-3313, extension 431, or Joy_Goldsmith@goodshepherds.org
