GOOD SHEPHERD SERVICES

Program News 2005

A Milestone for our Foyer

On Thursday, April 21st Good Shepherd staff, program participants, and supporters convened at the Chelsea Foyer residence to celebrate the program's one-year anniversary. The evening consisted of testimonials, poetry readings and song.  The Foyer has seen much success since it's opening in 2004, and our staff is particularly proud of the accomplishments of our young people in their journey to independence.  Says Case Manager Shanti Beckman, "In less than a year our young people have identified career goals, obtained vocational certificates, received promotions, enrolled in college, secured their own housing, and obtained college degrees. Many have developed healthier relationships with family members, increased their self-confidence, become familiar with community resources, and have learned the necessary independent living skills."  Program participants have thrived at the Foyer and have taken on a sense of ownership for the program and impressive facility. Program participants serve on the Residents' Council to advocate for their needs and maintain a forum of open communication amongst their peers.  Staff also aim to create an environment of education and empowerment by organizing a monthly calendar of activities including workshops on job readiness, housing, financial management, academic support groups, and a monthly group entitled "Sista Circle".

Another milestone was recently reached when the Foyer sponsored its first retreat, which provided another opportunity to promote the development of a wide range of "soft skills" for independent living and to build community.   Ten program participants and three staff took part in the agency's first ever co-ed retreat at Ramapo Anchorage Camp.  At Ramapo, residents and staff participated in high ropes, and various other challenge activities that helped to promote self-esteem, problem solving, and teamwork. The staff also composed a dance presentation for the residents as a special treat. Over all, this trip was a great opportunity for staff and residents to bond outside of the Foyer and to strengthen their trust and commitment to each other's success.
