Good Shepherd Mentors Honored

For the past six years Good Shepherd Services has been operating a mentoring program for the young people in our out-of-home care programs - the young women in our community group residences; youth from the adolescent unit of our foster boarding home division and young adults from our supportive housing program. On February 16, the youth threw a dinner party in the newly refurbished common room of St. Helena's Residence (see "Good Shepherd Residence featured in Oprah's Magazine") to honor their mentors.

It was a casual and friendly evening of socialization and appreciation; with a stupendous feast planned and prepared by the young people themselves, including shrimp jambalaya, fried chicken, steak and apple pie. Some mentors attended even though their mentees could not, and vice-versa. Also attending were some young people who are not yet involved in the mentoring program, taking the opportunity to see the dynamic in action. All mentors were presented with a ‘Double Omega' pin from the Mentoring Partnership of New York, which bears the symbol of larger omega wrapped around a smaller one, representing the mentor/mentee relationship.
