GOOD SHEPHERD SERVICES

Giving Thanks

Good Shepherd’s various programs marked the Thanksgiving holiday with a variety of different celebrations:

The Red Hook Community Center Beacon held their 16th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner at PS 15. Nearly 400 community members enjoyed a traditional Thanksgiving meal, catered by the Tavern on the Green and served cafeteria-style.

Our four non-secure detention residential programs came over the East & Harlem Rivers and through the city to gather at our 17th Street facility. It was the second Thanksgiving celebration to bring together all our NSD residents, and the first since the recent opening of our newest NSD residence, the Peter Jay Sharp house.

The Beacon at MS 45 joined with school staff to host a turkey dinner for over 100 people in the MS 45 cafeteria. In conjunction with the dinner, a workshop on the subject of basic nutrition and the importance of a balanced diet in maintaining an overall healthy lifestyle was presented by a Jacobi Hospital Health Educator.

The Grace Dodge YABC held a dinner for current students as well as graduates, all of whom were welcome to bring along family or friends. This feast was ‘nontraditional,’ involving a large variety of food, in recognition of the cultural diversity of the participants.

Our Therapeutic Foster Boarding Home Program celebrated its second anniversary as well as Thanksgiving. The children enjoyed board games, jewelry making and face-painting prior to dinner, and showed off their dancing and singing skills in a talent show afterwards. Following the talent show, each child was honored for their progress over the past year and all foster parents were presented with a gift in appreciation of their invaluable contributions.
