‘A Common Bond’ 2006

Our Red Hook Community Beacon recently teamed up with volunteers from the Architects' Union and Tudor Investments to create an entire model city of Legos©. Individual teams worked on specific buildings, such a school, museum or skyscraper, as well as a set of grounds to accompany each structure, and then all the separate pieces were joined together into a single community.

The Beacon youth had a great time while learning about design and construction from professionals, and the volunteers, many of whom brought their own children, seemed to be having just as much fun. "It was a wonderful experience to share with my own kids," said Robert Marsh of Tudor. The Architects' Union and the Red Hook Beacon have worked together before on several sandcastle building events (see "Not Just Another Day at the Beach" and "Castles in the Sand.") as well as a previous ‘A Common Bond' in 2004, but this was the most ambitious project yet. Longtime Good Shepherd Services supporter The Robin Hood Foundation made the expansion of scope possible by taking over much of the organizational responsibilities as well as bringing in Tudor, who generously underwrote the materials cost as well as providing volunteers.
