Castles and Creatures

For the past four summers, volunteers from the Architects Union, a grassroots organization created for the support, unity and empowerment of architects, have donated their time and expertise by spending a day at Coney Island building sandcastles with young people from our Red Hook Community Center Beacon Summer Camp program (see Not Just Another Day at the Beach and Castles in the Sand.) On August 10th, approximately 20 architects worked with over a hundred of our campers designing and constructing a variety of inventive structures.

The finished products boasted intricate towers, tunnels, moats and staircases, and several groups opted to sculpt creatures out of the sand, including mermaids, alligators, sharks, tigers, and a turtle carrying a city on its back. It was a valuable lesson in teamwork, planning, and design, while also being a highly enjoyable day at the beach, complete with dips in the ocean and the occasional playful water fight keeping everyone cool as they brought their visions to life.
