Building Healthy Relationships

Interns from the Learning-to-Work programs at our Young Adult Borough Centers (YABCs) at Canarsie and Lincoln High Schools have recently created a zine (homemade magazine/booklet) entitled Healthy Relationships as part of the Healthy Relationship Abuse Prevention Youth initiative.

Supported in part by funds from Radio Shack®, the initiative is a collaboration between our Family Reception Center (FRC) and Safe Homes Project (SHP) programs as well as the YABCs. FRC and SHP staff developed a nine-hour curriculum to educate students about teen relationship violence and its prevention, and empower them to take leadership in promoting awareness about this issue within their schools. Following completion of the curriculum, the interns embarked on peer education seminiars for fellow YABC students as well as members of the larger Canarsie and Lincoln High School student bodies.

Healthy Relationships, which was distributed to students at the seminars, features stories of abusive and healthy teen relationships, as well as myths & facts about relationship violence, warning signs, and the elements of a healthy relationship. The ‘zine also includes telephone numbers for resources such as the 24-hour National Teen Dating Abuse Hotline (866-331-9474), the 24-hour NYC Domestic Violence Hotline (800-621-HOPE) and SHP, Good Shepherd's domestic violence program, which offers crisis intervention, safety planning, legal advocacy, counseling, emergency shelter and other services (718-499-2151).
