Bronx Community High School
Almost two months into the school year, Bronx Community High School (BCHS), the second replication of our nationally acclaimed South Brooklyn Community High School model, is off to an excellent start.
“The students are embracing the school culture and really believing in the Good Shepherd model,” says Program Director Naida Pastrana of the young people who had been excessively truant or dropped out of high school prior to applying to BCHS, “We are averaging 85% attendance, and they are engaged, involved and participating in class.”
Our students are also enthusiastic about building a new school community. The BCHS student government is currently under formation, and a bake sale has been held to get a start on raising money for a prom.
BCHS is operated in partnership with the NYC Department of Education and jointly headed by Ms. Pastrana and Principal Matt Roberts, who was previously a Global Studies teacher at SBCHS. Following extensive summer training, the DOE and Good Shepherd staff quickly coalesced into what Ms. Pastrana describes as “one big family,” working as a team to provide our students with the supports and services they need to reconnect with their education and reach their full potential.
