Booking it in the Bronx, Part 2
The first ‘Book It In The Bronx’ reading day at our Beacon MS 45 Community Center was a Community TeamWorks project with our corporate partners at Goldman Sachs (see ‘A Summer of Volunteerism’). Goldman Sachs volunteers paired up with our younger Beacon participants for guided reading and to help the children create their own story books.
"The event was so successful," said Assistant Program Director Stanley Romulus, “that we decided to do it again on our own.” Beacon staff and volunteers eagerly took up the mantle and spent a recent Saturday partnering individually with children between the ages of six and nine to read and make arts & crafts.
After a morning of reading, special surprise guest 'Shrek' arrived to spend the afternoon with the children, posing for photographs with participants and their favorite books. "Everyone had a blast," says Romulus, "It was a wonderful day for the children, and it really encouraged them to read."
