Young People Gain Perspective From Rural Retreat

Last month 19 young women from four of our foster care programs participated in a retreat at Ramapo Anchorage Camp in upstate New York. The weekend not only exposed the young women to the beauty of the wilderness, but challenged them to embrace new people and experiences. With the support and encouragement of peers and staff, participants conquered the physical obstacles at Ramapo, which included rope climbing, scaling walls and maneuvering themselves among logs. These exercises forced the young women to confront their fears, and trust each other and work together to solve their problems. The retreat provided them with new experiences which enriched their lives in many ways-it helped them to build self confidence and gain support from the strong sense of community that developed during the weekend.
