Two New After-School Programs Up and Running
At the beginning of October, we opened two new after-school programs, serving a total of 200 children in two public schools where we have a presence through our Crossroads attendance improvement programs. The programs are fully enrolled and have already integrated some wonderful enrichment activities including capoiera, a Brazilian martial art that focuses on discipline and community. The 21st Century After-School Program at MS 293 Campus, serves 100 middle school students. The program operates four days a week and provides homework assistance, tutoring, literacy enhancement, community service activities, sports, arts and crafts and youth leadership activities. The 21st Century After-School Program at MS 142 Campus, serving100 students annually, operates two days a week and provides a variety of structured recreational activities in a tournament program that emphasizes the importance of teamwork and fair play.
With these two initiatives, Good Shepherd Services now operates five after-school programs in the South Brooklyn community and has a presence in eleven public elementary, middle and high schools in the neighborhoods of Red Hook, Gowanus and Park Slope. Through our school-based programs, we are providing children and families with a wide array of services including attendance outreach, student and family counseling, parent involvement activities and a rich program of extended-day activities. Together these programs are helping to ensure that vulnerable students have the supports and opportunities they need to achieve success in school and beyond.
