Teamwork Gets It Done
On Wednesday, June 23rd 30 volunteers recruited by the Robin Hood Foundation and 10 residents from the Euphrasian residence participated in a renovation project for the rooftop of our 17th Street facility. Through all their hard work and creativity the rooftop was transformed into a beautiful space, which the residents are proud of and will, undoubtedly, use daily this summer for social gatherings, barbecues, or just as a quiet place to relax.
Volunteers had the opportunity to hear from two of our residents, who were graduating from the Euphrasian program the very next day. They helped to convey some of the challenges they have confronted and the impact our diagnostic reception center has had on their lives. The warm, nurturing environment of our residence, the presence of caring adults and a strong support system helped them begin the healing process. Volunteers and Euphrasian residents were then divided into five teams: the peppers, the beans, the turnips, the tomatoes and the beets. Each group was responsible for a particular area of the rooftop where they planted seeds to grow vegetables or painted the surrounding walls. In addition to the rooftop project, other residents and volunteers worked feverishly in the kitchen to prepare dinner for the entire group.
The drive of both the volunteers and the residents to succeed and complete the project was wonderful to see, and they were clearly an inspiration for each other. As everyone left that night, after the project was completed, they were proud of their contributions towards the beautification of the rooftop, and they also felt a great sense of fulfillment and accomplishment to have been a part of this wonderful experience.
