Summer Fun in Red Hook

Over 150 first to eighth graders had a summer of memorable experiences at our summer camp at the Red Hook Community Center Beacon.  The children participated in a rich program of sports and games, club activities, bus trips and sessions with visiting artists in drama, dance and puppetry.  They even had a chance to participate in a hands-on exploration of the concepts of astronomy and astrophysics when the American Museum of Natural History's new Moveable Museum, Discovering the Universe visited. The camp program also made use of the talent and energy of 30 teens from Red Hook and surrounding neighborhoods who participated as Summer Youth employees or Leaders-in-Training.  The Leaders-in-Training planned and carried out a "World's Fair" Day at camp, celebrating diversity.  Five of the six summer camp units presented original plays and dances at the program's culminating event.  The sixth group, the middle school aged campers, presented their own event for the whole camp at the waterfront.  They built a 22 foot floating sea serpent which they launched in New York harbor and related an original tale about 'The Red Hook Dragon.'
