Gallery Exhibit Highlights Creative Talents of GSS Residents

On March 20th Good Shepherd teamed with Free Arts of NYC and The Neighborhood Youth Art Project (NYAP) to sponsor an exhibition of artwork completed by young people in our residential programs.  On display was a wide range of artwork completed during a collaborative, six week long art program for the young men in our Barbara Blum residence conducted by NYAP and by teenagers from our residential programs during special sessions with mentors of Free Arts of NYC.  The young artists were present at the event to share their efforts which included printmaking, silhouette designs, photographic narrative, wire sculpture and a group mural. The exhibit also featured a display of "personal shrines"created by the girls from our Marian Hall residence.  Young people from St. Helena's residence also helped to cater the event.

NYAP and Free Arts of NYC provide at-risk young people with the guidance and materials to create change in their lives through unique art projects.  Through the commitment of the volunteers in these programs, the young people in our care were able to experience the therapeutic process of creating art and were provided the opportunity to share a part of themselves in the Youth Art Show.  As Kevin, one of the coordinators of this event stated, "As this exhibition persuasively demonstrates, each of the boys at 'Blum' has a unique and distinct personality and character that is revealed and demonstrated by and through the works displayed.  They are truly amazing; their thoughts, vision and humor top-notch."
