Good Shepherd Teams Up with the South Brooklyn Local Development Corporation to Celebrate New After-School Programs

On Wednesday evening, January 16th, Good Shepherd Services teamed up with the South Brooklyn Local Development Corporation (SBLDC) to jointly sponsor A 21St Century Celebration, a special evening of performances to showcase the talents of the young people in their respective after-school programs. The event featured students from Good Shepherd Services' Horizons Unlimited After-School Program, and included performances by the Vocal Club and Capoiera Group, a Brazilian martial art that focuses on discipline and community technique. SBLDC's Shadow Program shared some of their experiences from the school-to-work program, its Jazz Band performed, while light refreshments and appetizers were prepared and served by young people from its Culinary Arts Club.

The dynamic kick-off celebration was the first of its kind at the MS 293 Educational Campus. Both Good Shepherd and SBLDC after-school programs are both housed at MS 293 Educational Campus through a collaboration with NYC Community School District 15 and funded through the US Dept. of Education's "21st Century Community Learning Centers" initiative. Good Shepherd's 21st Century After-School Program at MS 293 Campus, started in October 2001, is a four-day-a-week program providing homework assistance, tutoring, literacy enhancement, community service activities, sports, arts and crafts, and youth leadership training. It serves 100 middle school students from The School for International Studies as well as The Brooklyn School for Global Studies.
