Castles in the Sand

On Friday, August 6th volunteers from the Architects Union teamed up with 150 youth ages 6 through 14 from our Summer Camp at the Red Hook Community Center Beacon, for a fun-filled day of building sandcastles on Coney Island Beach.  This was the second year in a row that the Architects Union sponsored this event, which the youth enjoyed immensely. The volunteers and youth were split into 10 different groups, played games to get to know each other, and then brainstormed ideas on the type of castle they wanted to build. The architects served as the group leaders, supporting the youths' creative input into the construction of the castle. This event gave our young people some insight into the process architects use to formulate structural designs in their field of work. The youth were definitely intrigued by their knowledge, created some beautiful castles, as well as enjoyed an wonderful day at the beach.
