Liberty Partnership Program Alumni Day at John Jay High School

In January a panel of graduates from the Liberty Partnership Program (LPP), our college preparation program at John Jay High School, participated in a Q&A session with current LPP participants and open to other students from the school.  Approximately 15 alumni, the majority of whom were college freshman, spoke about their experiences as staff facilitated. The LPP graduates came from a variety of colleges and universities, including Hunter College, SUNY Binghamton and Long Island University. The alumni discussed topics such as choosing a major, managing money, financial aid, living away from home and balancing studies and social life. "Living away from home is a lot of responsibility, no one is on your back," explained one student. When asked about the difficulties of adapting to college academia, one LPP alumna expressed her belief that "Each one of us has that hidden talent, you just need to know yourself." The session was a dynamic interaction-panelists were excited to share their stories and encourage their younger peers to pursue higher education while the current LPP students were eager to hear what their predecessors had to share.
