“I See the World So Differently Now”
Good Shepherd Services was in the spotlight at the recent Spring Convening of the Alternative High School Initiative (AHSI). AHSI is a network of youth development organizations, including Good Shepherd, which works to create educational opportunities for young people who have not been successful in traditional school settings.
The three-day Convening included an overview of NYC's Multiple Pathways to Graduation programming presented by Good Shepherd's Director of Transfer Schools alongside Department of Education and Youth Development Institute staff, a tour of South Brooklyn Community High School (SBCHS), and most exciting of all, the ‘Multiple Pathways to Success Panel' where current SBCHS, Downtown Brooklyn YABC and Monroe YABC students, as well as a second-generation SBCHS alumnus, took questions from a Department of Education moderator and the AHSI guests.
Frank, a Monroe YABC student, gave high praise to the Learning-to-Work component of our Multiple Pathways programs. "Before, I didn't know how to go on a job interview or get a job. The LTW program got me an internship in something I'm interested in, and I really learned how to network"
"I see the world so differently now," said SBCHS graduate Trequan, in response to a query about whether the experience had significantly changed the participants, "When I went to South Brooklyn, everyone saw the good in me, so now I know how to see the good in everybody."
