A Weekend to Remember
This past October young women from our foster care and residential programs participated in Celebrating Your Journey, a three day retreat which took place at Ramapo Anchorage Camp. Fifteen young women and eight staff from our residential and foster boarding home programs, participated in a wonderful weekend which combined structured and leisure activities that helped to promote self-esteem, empowerment, cooperation and community-building. The retreat combined physical challenges and experiential learning activities with a rich recreational program designed to build community, increase self-confidence and self-awareness, strengthen goal setting, problem solving and peer leadership skills and promote personal growth. High and low ropes courses and trust building activities challenged the participants to go beyond their limits, work with others to solve problems and experience individual and group success. Recreational activities such as boating, hiking, skating and arts and crafts helped to expand horizons and strengthen connections. The retreat was a product of joint planning efforts that we have undertaken to integrate the independent living services provided in our group residences and foster boarding home program.
