A Day of Artistic Expression at GSS
This February 50 young men and women from our residential programs took part in a day of artistic expression sponsored by Free Arts of New York City, a nonprofit organization committed to bringing the healing power of art to New York's vulnerable children and families. For one Saturday, volunteers transformed the gym of one of our residential locations into a festival of music, dance, poetry and visual arts. During the first half of the day, our young people participated in arts and crafts workshops that involved such activities as constructing photo albums, journals and designing t-shirts. After lunch, volunteers from the Bowery Poetry Club performed improvisational sketches and gave a presentation on the history of Hip-Hop. Residents were then split into groups to explore and participate in numerous workshops available to them including modern dance, break dancing, and even the art of operating a turntable! The day gave the young people in our five residential programs an opportunity to learn positive forms of expression and communication while building trusting relationships with volunteers and peers.
