18th Annual Domestic Violence Vigil Remembers Those Lost and Honors Survivors

On October 14, staff of The Safe Homes Project (SHP) gathered with volunteers, participants, supporters, and community members to light 20 candles in memory of those who died as a result of domestic violence this past year in Brooklyn at its Domestic Violence Remembrance Vigil.   This annual event marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month and also honors survivors of domestic violence.  Special guest speaker Dr. Adwoa Akhu, a survivor of domestic violence, who was helped by SHP ten years ago, shared her moving story with assembled guests,  Now a psychologist and advocate, Dr. Akhu is the author of "Metamorphosis: Journaling the Path from Domestic Violence Victim to Victor."  Gabriella Calender of the musical group "Mahina Movement", who witnessed domestic violence as a child and is also a survivor, played beautiful and powerful songs of healing.  Officers from the 84th Police Precinct were also on hand to honor one of their members who was killed responding to a domestic violence call.  City Councilmember Brad Lander, Deputy Brooklyn Borough President  Yvonne Graham and Assembly Member James Brennan addressed the crowd and praised SHP for its 35 years of work on behalf of victims and survivors of domestic violence.
