A Strength-Based Youth Development Approach
About Youth Development
Central to our work with young people is our belief that positive outcomes are achieved through an approach that builds on their existing strengths and competencies, while also recognizing the need to meet important adolescent developmental needs. Youth Development is the positive way in which youth, together with caring adults, meet their needs and build their competencies.
A positive youth development philosophy:
- Values young people regardless of their situation
- Recognizes the strengths and potential of each youth
- Believes that our primary focus is promoting a young person's development rather than identifying and fixing his/her problems
Youth development programs provide supports and opportunities for young people to:
- Feel Safe
- Build Relationships with Caring Adults
- Acquire Knowledge and Skills
- Engage in Meaningful Activities
